This year’s third round saw even more upsets, with four MLS teams exiting the tournament. The reigning MLS Cup champs were once again among the casualties, with the Columbus Crew losing to the Rochester Rhinos on penalties. A pair of USL-2 sides pulled off victories, with the Wilmington Hammerheads defeating the Chicago Fire and the Harrisburg City Islanders vanquishing the New England Revolution. Charleston advanced to the quarterfinals for the second straight year, this time at the expense of Chivas USA.
