Hunt for first victory continues in Salt Lake

Posted on 05 May 2008 by ASN Staff

The Real Salt Lake Reserves used a four-goal effort in the first half to run away to a 5-2 victory over the LA Galaxy Reserves in the Utah side’s 2008 MLS Reserve Division home opener Sunday morning at the Quinn’s Junction sports complex in Park City. Bryan Jordan and Josh Tudela scored the goals for the Galaxy, who are winless after three matches this season and have an 0-2-1 record.

For Jordan, it was his third goal in four Reserves games this season.
Yura Movsisyan opened the scoring for RSL after only 35 seconds, finishing a pass from Tino Nuñez. Kevin Reiman doubled the lead in the 26th minute when he capped his own lengthy run down the left flank with a low shot to the far post that beat Galaxy keeper Josh Wicks.

The RSL Reserves would get two more goals from the penalty spot during the remainder of the half, the first set up just after the half hour mark when Dustin Kirby was taken down by a hard-charging Wicks just inside the area after he played a clever give-and-go with Matias Cordoba, who stroked the ensuing penalty kick just inside the right post to stretch the lead to 3-0. Just before the halftime whistle a run from RSL MF Brennan Tennelle was halted by a foul from Galaxy MF Brandon Owens, resulting in a second spot kick. Movsisyan stepped up and converted with another low shot, this time sticking it inside the left post to bring the RSL lead to 4-0 at the interval.

The onset of the second half would see the visitors get one back from the spot themselves, set up in the 48th minute when Jordan was knocked off the ball with a hard shoulder inside the area by RSL DF Drew Van Wagenen to draw the opportunity from the spot, which Jordan himself converted with a low shot inside the right post to put LA on the board. The Galaxy got one from the run of play in the 67th minute, when Tudela’s well-placed effort from the top of the area got past Chris Seitz, cutting the lead in half at 4-2. But RSL would reclaim its three-goal lead in the 75th minute, when a quickly-played passing sequence between Cordoba and FW Robbie Findley ended with a chance for FW Adam Acosta, who buried a shot past Wicks to end the scoring at 5-2.

Quakes spoil home opener

Posted on 05 April 2008 by ASN Staff

The LA Galaxy Reserves fell to the San Jose Earthquakes in their home opener on Friday afternoon, losing 2-1. Adam Smarte scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute to give the Earthquakes their first win of the season and drop the Galaxy to a 0-1-1 record.

The two sides traded penalty kicks in the first half, with Michael Ricketts giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. LA defender Michael Gavin was called for a foul inside the box on Smarte, setting up the spot kick for Ricketts who beat Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Wicks high to his right.

However, that lead would be short-lived as Edson Buddle scored a penalty of his own, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 30th minute and sending the game into the halftime break on level terms.

The score would stay that way until midway through the second half when Smarte put the Earthquakes in front for good. San Jose midfielder Ryan Johnson’s long ball from midfield was placed perfectly for Smarte who got in behind the Galaxy defense and slotted his shot past Wicks for the 2-1 advantage.

The Galaxy pushed for an equalizer, but it was not to be as Peter Vagenas and Israel Sesay each had shots saved by Preston Burpo. LA forward Bryan Jordan beat Burpo with a header late on, but he was adjudged to have fouled the San Jose ‘keeper, allowing the visitors to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Ten-man Galaxy manage tie with Colorado

Posted on 01 April 2008 by ASN Staff

The Colorado Rapids Reserves battled the Los Angeles Galaxy Reserves to a 1-1 draw today at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Bryan Jordan scored for the Galaxy, who started the game with 10 men.

The Rapids Reserves had the first scoring chance in the ninth minute. Cesar Zambrano earned a free kick 20 yards from goal and Herculez Gomez took a shot but it went just over the crossbar.

The Rapids Reserves got on the board first when Herculez struck from distance. The 25-yard bomb was too hard for Josh Wicks to handle as the ball found its way into the net.

Just six minutes after halftime the Galaxy Reserves got their equalizer. Mike Randolph played a cross in from the left and Bryan Jordan headed the ball down and into the goal.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the 66th minute. Jordan Harvey dove in front of a Galaxy shot to deflect it and Jacob Peterson forced a diving save from Wicks on the other end of the pitch.

Rafael Gomes had the last quality chance to score in the 80th minute. The Brazilian took one touch around his defender and fired a shot but Wicks was in perfect position to corral the shot.
