The U.S. Men’s National Team has chosen Honduras as its first opponent of 2010. The game will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Jan. 23, a Saturday. Tickets can be purchased through USsoccer.com.
The choice of Honduras is a curious one considering the U.S. faced the Catrachos four times in 2009. Head coach Bob Bradley even acknowledged as much in the U.S. Soccer Federation statement announcing the match. “Obviously we know the quality of the Honduran team very well,” he said. Not only does the USMNT know Honduras but the Yanks appear to have their number, winning all four games against the Central American nation this year.
The choice makes even less sense when taking into consideration the makeup of the U.S. World Cup group. Neither England nor Slovenia nor Algeria play a style anything like Honduras. Surely Bradley will want to test his team against teams that play more of a continental style? Maybe that will take place later in the preparation cycle.
