The Columbus Crew’s Chad Marshall is training with German second division side FSV Mainz 05, the club reported on its Web site. The 24-year old was due to start tonight’s exhibition match with Darmstadt but is only training with the team through Thursday, the site reports.
Update, Dec. 9: A German press report says the team will decide by Thursday if it is to offer Marshall a contract. Marshall was closely watched during last night’s game with Darmstadt, the report adds.
Update, Dec. 10: Marshall was in “good form” today (Wednesday), according to a German press report. Mainz coach Joerg Andersen will take another look at Marshall in training Thursday. On Saturday, he will fly back to the U.S. to wait for a decision, the story adds.
Update Dec. 17: In a German-language interview with a local paper, Mainz manager Christian Heidel said Marshall made a good impression and “flew back [to the U.S.] with a good feeling [about the trial],” implying Marshall has an offer in hand.
