Never say die attitude keeps Champions League dream alive for Crew

Posted on 10 March 2010 by jzidar

Down two goals at halftime, the Columbus Crew rallied to draw visiting Toluca in the first half of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal. With the result, the black and gold have a fighting chance in the return leg in Mexico next week, though they’ll need to become the first MLS side to win a game south of the border. ASN’s John Zidar analyzes the match and provides player ratings for the home side. Be sure to check out the photo gallery of the match as well.

Crew rally to draw Toluca in first leg of CCL quarterfinal

Posted on 09 March 2010 by ASN Staff

Lenhart had several reasons for making faces

The Columbus Crew dominated possession and were the better team for large portions of Tuesday night’s CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal home leg. Yet after 45 minutes the Major League Soccer side found themselves down 2-0, with any hope of advancement withering on the vine. It is a testament to the character of Robert Warzycha’s team that they were able to come back in the second half. They did so on a pair of goals by Steven Lenhart, who had missed from point blank range in the opening moments of the match. Thanks to the draw the Crew have a fighting chance when they visit the Mexican club for the return leg March 17. Much more to follow. In the meantime check out ASN’s photo gallery from the match.

Makeshift Columbus Crew squad to take on Toluca for spot in CCL semis

Posted on 09 March 2010 by jzidar

In only a few hours time the Columbus Crew will renew their battle for the CONCACAF Champions League when they take on Toluca of the Mexican First Division at Crew Stadium. The match is the first leg of a two game series, the second of which will take place on Toluca’s home turf, Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Guille won't be in the lineup tonight. Neither will Hejduk or Marshall

The Crew will be without four of its best players, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Frankie Hejduk, Chad Marshall and Jed Zayner. So no chance for Columbus, right? Not so fast, says ASN’s new Crew beat writer. Danny O’Rourke and Brian Carroll have recovered from off season surgeries and should be in strong form. And the team still has an advantage on set pieces and should be able to create matchup problems on the wings.

Read on at ASN’s Crew page.

Dynamo fall to Pachuca, lose control of destiny in CCL

Posted on 01 October 2009 by dbuckholt

Brian Mullan hit one off the post in first half stoppage time

The Houston Dynamo no longer control their own destiny in the CONCACAF Champions League after losing 1-0 to Mexico’s Pachuca Wednesday night at Robertson Stadium. A Brian Mullan shot off the post was as close as the home side came to breaking through against their Mexican opponents. Houston must now win on the road in their final group stage match–something the team has never done in 10 attempts in CCL play.

Donald Buckholt reports from Houston.
