Oguchi Onyewu signs with AC Milan

Posted on 07 July 2009 by ASN Staff

Oguchi Onyewu will become the first U.S. player to ply his trade in Italy’s Serie A since Alexi Lalas in the mid-1990s. AC Milan today announced it had signed Onyewu to a three-year contract. “Gooch” joins the rossoneri on a free transfer after his contract with Belgium’s Standard Liege expired at the end of last season.

In winning Onyewu’s signature, AC Milan is believed to have outbid at least half a dozen clubs, including storied sides Ajax Amsterdam, Paris Saint Germain and (most recently) Real Madrid.

Signing with AC Milan also raises the very real possibility Onyewu will be David Beckham’s teammate should the Englishman decide to return to Milan at the end of the Major League Soccer season.

Whither Gooch?

Posted on 01 July 2009 by ASN Staff

No fewer than half a dozen teams are reportedly bidding for the services of U.S. Men’s National Team centerback Oguchi Onyewu. Various reports, mainly from Europe have linked Onyewu to Ajax Amsterdam, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint Germain, Fiorentina, Genoa, Palermo, Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. And what would a Yank transfer story be without Fulham being listed as a possible destination?

A Dutch-language report that reported the Ajax link also said Portsmouth and Partizan Belgrade are interested.

In the past, Onyewu has been linked to Olympique Marseille and Cologne.

Keeping up with all the gossip requires proficiency in several languages but here is a partial Spanish-language summary courtesy of Goal.com.

Of course, the 27-year old may not go anywhere. According to several reports from Belgium and France, Gooch said he will not close the door to a return to Standard Liege, where he has been under (a now expired) contract since 2004.
