Steve Ralston returns to the Revs

Posted on 08 June 2010 by Hank Alexandre

Former Revolution midfielder Steve Ralston will be rejoining the team he left just a few months ago, according to Boston Herald reporter Kyle McCarthy.

As the Revolution retained the rights to the midfielder, having tried to sign him to an extension last season, the move seemed inevitable when Ralston announced over the weekend that he was leaving his position as Player/Coach at AC St. Louis to return to MLS.

AC St. Louis is a club in turmoil at this stage.  Largely backed by foreign investors hard hit by the economic crisis in Europe, the ACSTL organization has been forced to take large steps to remain in operation.  The first step was the termination of the WPS side St Louis Athletica, in just its second year of operation.   Ralston’s resignation from the club, was the second, and there will likely be more according to recent reports.

New England’s midifeld has struggled to find its form this season.  With Shalrie Joseph missing most of the season due to injury and leave of absence, and other players not available either due to suspension or injury, Steve Nicol has been forced to play different players in various formations.   Ralston has been a fan favorite in New England, and the team is hopeful that he will bring the leadership and the creativity he was well known for back onto the pitch.

The move also brings the Revolution roster into focus.  The Revolution currently have an open roster spot left vacant by Mauricio Castro, who was released from the team last month.  However, the Revolution also have trialist/SuperDraft pick Jason Griffiths with the team, and may be forced to let him go.  Ralston’s return also gives Nicol and VP of Player Perssonel Mike Burns the opportunity to waive some players who are not performing to the team’s expectations.
