Weekend MLS roundup: Fire upset Galaxy in Ljungberg debut

Posted on 01 August 2010 by jtobin

A three goal first half by the Chicago Fire sparked the visiting team to a 3-2 victory over the struggling LA Galaxy on Sunday night. It was the highest number of goals the Fire have scored all season. Recent designated player signing Freddie Ljungberg replaced Marco Pappa in the 57th minute, but didn’t make much of an impact as the Fire decided to absorb the Galaxy’s pressure and relied on the counter-attack.

Since returning from the World Cup break, the Galaxy have hit a wall of sorts. Los Angeles is 2-2-2 in its last six MLS matches and has been bounced out of the US Open Cup and is in danger of sealing a similar fate in the CONCACAF Champions League Tournament. Los Angeles, which had only allowed four goals in its first 15 games, has conceded nine goals in its last three matches. “It’s a concern,” Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter told ASN’s Ivan Yeo. “We have to take a look at it and get back to the basics.”

Jeff Tobin has the happier recap from Chicago.

Ljungberg’s old team, the Seattle Sounders, also had a successful weekend, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday 1-0 in a game greatly disappointing Quakes fans. It was the kind of poor showing that had Yallop publicly criticizing his team and Quakes fans talking about wishing they had not come. Eric Pederson reports from San Jose, Calif.

The New England Revolution and the Philadelphia Union fought to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoo. Sebastien Le Toux continued his MVP form with a wonderfully-taken goal in the first half but the Revs hit back through the red-hot Marko Perovic, his fourth league goal this season.

The Revs picked up a much-needed road point to continue their league resurgence. Steven Stoehr provides the New England reaction. But the Union feel hard-done by the result, as Breton Bonnette reports from Philadelphia.

Despite holding the lead twice, being up a man for the final 47 minutes of the game, not to mention having Thierry Henry at their disposal, the New York Red Bulls only managed a meager point away to the Houston Dynamo. Daniel Karell has the RBNY reaction.

FC Dallas went up a Mile High and came down with a point. The boys from north Texas remained unbeaten for the eighth straight game, leaving Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO with a 1-1 draw versus the Colorado Rapids Saturday afternoon. Philip Woodruff recaps the match from an FC Dallas viewpoint.

Speaking of excursions to altitude, in Utah Real Salt Lake dismantled DC United 3-1. Patrick McShane has the blow-by-blow of that match, while from the nation’s capital, Steve Long writes that DC United are still poised to exceed the mediocre record they have established for themselves. Though the playoffs still won’t happen.

ASN’s MLS Best XI, Week Fifteen

Posted on 20 July 2010 by Breton Bonnette

Week 15's Best XI has several new inclusions as we hit the halfway point of what has proven to be a very interesting season. Kansas City, however, looking lost for the past several weeks, rode the quality play of their shotstopper to a much-needed week of results. The Union found more late game dramatics to secure three points at PPL Park, led by a fan favorite who just celebrated an impressive milestone. The battle for Player of the Week in the end went against the grain and to someone that has kept his squad in a match more times than any of us could count. Read on here.

ASN’s MLS Best XI, Week Thirteen

Posted on 08 July 2010 by Breton Bonnette

A whirlwind start to post-World Cup 2010 life produced goals galore for some and continued heartbreak for many. Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles continue to show that their the cream of the crop while D.C. United and New England - once virtual locks for the top of the Eastern Conference - fall to the bottom of the league table. Week Thirteen's player of the week is a maestro that has followed up a down 2009 season with a 2010 season that warrants all of the MVP talk surrounding him. ASN Philly's got the goods so check 'em out!

Brimstone burnout? Fire, FCD draw 1-1

The Chicago Fire traded first half goals with FC Dallas for a 1-1 stalemate at Toyota Park Thursday evening. David Ferreira struck first for the Texan side before Brian McBride equalized shortly before halftime. The Brimstone Cup feature showed little of the passion of its earlier years, with both teams appearing complacent throughout.

Jeff Tobin reports from Bridgeview, Ill., and supplies player ratings for the home side.

From North Texas, Philip Woodruff does likewise for FC Dallas.

MLS Week 8 wrap-up

Posted on 16 May 2010 by Breton Bonnette

The LA Galaxy hoped to send Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle off to national team camp in style, with a win over Toronto FC Saturday night at the Home Depot Center. It didn’t happen thanks in no small part to the exploits of TFC keeper Stefan Frei. “A goalkeeper can always be a great equalizer in our sport and he was great tonight,” Donovan said of Frei’s effort after the match. Still, the 0-0 draw allows the Galaxy to keep their unbeaten start to the season intact. ASN’s Ivan Yeo reports from Carson, Calif.

Three thousand miles away, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., Fred Montero single-handedly put an end to the New York Red Bulls unbeaten run at their new ground. Montero slotted home the only goal of the match in the 85th minute. ASN has tons of coverage from that match.

Down the road in Philadelphia, FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea scored his first ever MLS regular season goal, which stood up until the very last minute of stoppage time when Philadelphia’s Danny Mwanga got his first career goal. The Union rookie rocketed a shot from just inside the box for a 1-1 final at Lincoln Financial Field. Breton Bonnette wrote a match report while Sam Toma rated the Philadelphia players.

Philip Woodruff followed the proceedings from Dallas and supplied a match report and FC Dallas player ratings.

In the nation’s capital, the Colorado Rapids ended one of the longest streaks in MLS history, defeating DC United 1-0 at RFK Stadium for the first time in 11 years and sending the home side further into the abyss of the MLS table. Chris Snear has that report.

For just the second time this season and the first time in over a month, the New England Revolution were able to keep a clean sheet as they held their opponents the San Jose Earthquakes scoreless. Although the Revs were not able to find the back of the net themselves, they proved not only to have the defensive mettle necessary to earn a draw, but showed strength in the midfield for the second league game in a row. Hank Alexandre reports from Gillette Stadium.

Finally, in Kansas City, with the home side trailing 2-1 in the 89th minute, Kei Kamara found himself all alone in front of a gaping goal. Less than a month ago in similar circumstances, the Wizards striker garnered worldwide attention when he slipped, missed the ball, and handled on his way to the ground. This time, Kamara remained on his feet and easily tapped it in to complete a two goal, second-half comeback for the Wizards. “This time I was wearing blue shoes,” Kamara explained after the match, which was covered by Nate Brinson.

ASN’s MLS Best XI, Week Seven

Posted on 11 May 2010 by Breton Bonnette

Landon Donovan ©Craig Bennett/ASN
Landon Donovan took ASN's Week Seven Player of the Week honors though his competition did well to keep pace. San Jose's Bobby Convey did his best impression of Donovan, grabbing a trio of assists in the Quakes 4-0 romp of visiting New York. Toronto FC's Chad Barrett and DC United's Danny Allsopp earned their first spot on the Best XI with a brace each in respective wins. Amidst a week of blowouts and scoring, however, most impressively FC Dallas' and former Kansas City castoff Kevin Hartman pulled off two shutouts for a FC Dallas squad hungry for wins. Head over to ASN Philly to see this week's squad!

Saturday smack-down day in MLS

Posted on 09 May 2010 by ASN Staff

It was a Saturday of spankings in Major League Soccer. Four of the seven matches were decided by three goals or more, as teams from New York, Philadelphia and Seattle turned in lackluster (or worse) performances. The LA Galaxy continued their dominance in the latest sign that maybe, just maybe, MLS’ culture of parity is coming undone a bit. Or not, judging by events in Toronto and Columbus.

The Galaxy returned to the scene of their MLS Cup defeat and demonstrated why they are the best team in the league by defeating Seattle Sounders 4-0. It was the first time a visiting team has scored more than twice at Qwest Field. The drubbing leaves the men in green to wonder what exactly went wrong – and how they can turn around their increasingly disappointing season. “We got beat and we got beat solidly,” said Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid. “It’s not the kind of game we ever want to repeat again.” ASN’s Nick Schiffler reports from Seattle and provides Sounders player ratings.

The team that defeated the Galaxy in that MLS Cup match had an easy time of it on their home ground as the Philadelphia Union rolled over at Rio Tinto Stadium and Real Salt Lake strolled to a 3-0 lead. Patrick McShane reports from Sandy, Utah and provides player ratings for the victorious home side. A photo gallery is on the way as well (sneak preview on the right). ASN Philly has an initial reaction from head coach Piotr Nowak as well.

The Houston Dynamo got goals from Brad Davis and Adrian Serioux in the first eight minutes of the match and Chivas USA never recovered at the Home Depot Center Saturday night. With the 2-0 loss, Chivas’ three game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end. “We came out flat, and they took advantage,” head coach Martin Vasquez said after the match. “That was the difference.” ASN’s Tony Bruce reports from Carson, Calif. and provides player assessments for the home side. Also, Chivas’ discussions forum is open for business for fans to discuss matters amongst themselves.

A few hundred miles to the north, the home side had far better luck. A poor decision by Luke Sassano 13 minutes into turned costly for the visiting New York Red Bulls at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. A surprise starter at right back, Sassano’s studs up challenge on the San Jose Earthquakes’ Bobby Convey earned an automatic ejection. The team kept its shape for about 30 minutes before things came apart. The home side scored on the stroke of halftime and the floodgates opened in the second half. Tim Ream and Bouna Condoul played poorly to contribute to the Red Bulls’ malaise. Final score: Quakes 4, Red Bulls 0. The RBNY reaction is up, complete with player ratings for the visiting starters. The Quakes POV to follow.

FC Dallas followed a mid-week first ever win at Robertson Stadium against heated and hated rival the Houston Dynamo with 1-0 win over visiting DC United Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park. This extends to 12 the unbeaten game streak at home, dating to June 2009 for regular season play. ASN’s Phil Woodruff was on hand in Frisco, Tex., and filed the following report.

ASN Twitter follower standings, round seven

Posted on 05 May 2010 by ASN Staff

It’s the start of a new month, which means it is time to revisit our Twitter account standings! This table tracks the number of followers each Major League Soccer team has through its ASN Twitter account. We launched this feature
about six months ago.

1. (1). LA Galaxy: 837 followers (4 more than on April 9)
2. (2). Seattle Sounders FC: 620 (+3)
3. (3). New York Red Bulls: 615 (+35)
4. (4). Toronto FC: 529 (+63)
5. (5). Chicago Fire: 401 (+3)
6. (6). Houston Dynamo : 385 (-1)
7. (7). Chivas USA: 340 (+6)
8. (8). Columbus Crew: 325 (+9)
9. (11). Philadelphia Union: 317 (+35)
10. (9). DC United: 311 (+0)
11. (10). New England Revolution: 294 (+0)
12 (12). Real Salt Lake: 267 (+2)
13. (14). FC Dallas: 255 (+10)
14. (13). San Jose Earthquakes: 245 (-1)
14. (15). Kansas City Wizards: 245 (+8)
16. (16). Colorado Rapids: 191 (+7)

A very interesting month. For the first time since we’ve been keeping this table teams actually lost followers. Granted it was just one follower in both instances; @DynamoASN and @QuakesASN. But it is still surprising, particularly in the latter’s case. The Quakes have been performing better on the field since, well, since they became the Houston Dynamo. And nearby Silicon Valley should surely result in more tech-savvy (and Twitter savvy?) fans than in a place like Salt Lake City or Columbus (to grossly over-generalize)?

But it wasn’t just these two accounts that suffered. Growth was anemic or inexistent (0 new followers by @dcuASN and @RevsASN–the first time that’s happened too) in all but three accounts: @TorontoFCasn (the biggest gainer by far), @RBNYasn and @PhillyUnionASN. The Union jumped two spots and the Red Bulls are within striking distance of @SoundersASN, whom they trail by five followers–something that can easily be made up in the month ahead. @LAgalaxyASN remains far ahead in the distance but a paltry four new followers at least means it didn’t expand this lead.

Oh by the way: Just in case you were wondering, ASN’s “mothership” Twitter account, @amersocc, which covers broader (not always team-specific) issues affecting the American game, boasts 1,341 followers at the time of this writing. Our Women’s Professional Soccer account, @wpsASN, is followed by 703 people.
