Second Time’s a Charm: US Women Defeat Sweden 3-0

The US Women's National Team faced Sweden on Saturday night at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. The meeting between the top-ranked US and fourth-ranked Sweden was the second between the two teams in less than a week - Tuesday night the two played to a 1-1 draw in Omaha, Nebraska.

USWNT renews rivalry with Sweden in two-game series

The USA renews what has been an excellent rivalry with Sweden, the home nation of its coach Pia Sundhage, during two summer matches starting tonight in Omaha, Neb. With the USA ranked first in the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings and Sweden at fourth, U.S. fans will once again get to see two of the top women’s teams in the world square off on American soil. Sundhage has called up 24 players, she will name 18 to suit up for both contests with the Swedes and could juggle the game roster between matches. Read on at ASN's U.S. Women's National Teams page.

USWNT dissemble Germany, 4-0

Abby Wambach notched a brace, her 105th and 106th career goals, and Kristine Lilly added her 130th late in the match as the U.S. Women's National Team took apart Germany by a 4-0 score Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The clash between the two top-ranked national teams saw the U.S. take a 2-0 lead into halftime, to double the advantage and settle matters by the 63rd minute. The victory made it three wins in a row for the USA against Germany, the first time the Americans have accomplished that feat in almost nine years. Read the match report here.

Photo gallery: USWNT defeat Mexico in first-ever ‘Snow Game’

The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Mexico 1-0 on a goal from Abby Wambach at the one hour mark. It marked the first time in the USWNT's 26-year, 443-game history that the team has played a game in snow. ASN was there for this historic occasion. Lilly returns in USWNT victory over Mexico

Shannon Boxx notched a goal and an assist for the U.S. Women's National Team, which easily defeated its south-of-the-border rival 3-0. Sunday's international friendly at San Diego's Torero Stadium also say the return of Kristine Lilly to the U.S. squad. The most-capped player in soccer history came on for Sky Blue FC's Yael Averbuch 32 minutes in.

USWNT to face Germany in second-ever Cleveland appearance

The U.S. Women's National Team will face Germany on May 22 at Cleveland Browns Stadium, as the world’s top two women’s soccer nations meet on American soil for the first time since the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The U.S. has played in Cleveland just once previously, in 2007. Germany is returning the game the USA played Oct. 29, 2009, in Augsburg, Germany.

The U.S. Women’s National Team lost a penalty kick shootout to Sweden in the championship game of the 2009 Algarve Cup after the match ended dramatically with a 1-1 score in regulation. Shannon Boxx equalized in the 90th minute and the match went directly to penalty kicks, where the USA lost 4-3 after seven shooters. (ASN, March 11, 2009.

It was a different story this year. Appearing in their ninth straight Algarve Cup final, the U.S. team got goals from Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach and Lauren Cheney to defeat Germany 3-2 and claim the 2010 title.

Carly Lloyd put the U.S. up after just 18 minutesThe U.S. Women's National Team got goals from Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach and Lauren Cheney to defeat Germany 3-2 and claim the 2010 Algarve Cup title. The win marked the seventh time the USA has won the tournament and sixth time in the last eight years. The U.S. has been in the final every year since 2002. ASN's USWNT page has more on the match.

USWNT squad named for Algarve Cup

Following a 20-day training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has named a 19-player roster for the 2010 Algarve Cup in Portugal that will run Feb. 24 through March 3. The roster chosen by Sundhage features one of the biggest turnovers from the previous year’s Algarve Cup roster since the USA started attending the tournament in 1994. Only eight players from last year’s 18-player roster made the squad this time around, meaning there will be some new faces at the tournament. Sundhage will bring an extra goalkeeper for training purposes as the Chicago Red Stars’ Jill Loyden makes her first national team roster, where she will team with U.S. starter Hope Solo and Nicole Barnhart. USWNT kick start Algarve Cup title defense with training camp

No sooner has the Women's Professional Soccer draft been completed that the U.S. Women’s National Team has convened at The Home Depot Center for an extended 20-day training camp in Carson, Calif. The runs through Feb. 4 and features two scrimmages against the Korea Republic Women’s National Team. More importantly, it gives head coach Pia Sundhage a final look at her crop of players before selecting the 18-player roster for the Algarve Cup that kicks off Feb. 24.
