Galaxy sign Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo

Looking to further solidify its goalkeeper position, the Los Angeles Galaxy took a step towards that direction when it signed Panamanian Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo on Monday.

“He’s a good goalkeeper,” Galaxy Head Coach/General Manager Bruce Arena said in a statement released. “I followed him for years for Panama. He’s got a lot of experience; he probably has between 85 and 90 international caps. We think that he’ll help strengthen the goal position for us.”

The 31-year-old Penedo will be looked upon to provide  cover at the goalkeeper position, which is currently held by Carlo Cudicini, who came over after spending most of his career across Europe, with stints at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Cudicini recorded a shutout on opening week against the Chicago Fire, but his play has been on and off throughout the season.

Penedo began his club career in his native Panama with Plaza Amador before joining Arabe Unido, who he helped lead to the Apertura and Clausura titles in 2004. After two years in Europe, playing in Italy for Cagliari and in Spain for Ossauna, Penedo returned to Central America, joining Guatemalan side Municipal in 2007. Penedo spent the last six years with the Guatemala City-based club, helping them win two Clausura titles (2008 and 2010) and two Apertura titles (2009 and 2011) while appearing in more than 150 games for the club. Municipal also qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League four times in the six years of the competition. Penedo has also been a fixture on the Panamian National Team with 91 caps and leading Panama to the CONCACAF Gold Cup finals in 2005 and 2013, losing both times to the United States.

Penedo could make his debut on Wednesday when the Galaxy face AC Milan for third place of the Guinness International Champions Cup in Miami.

Sounders Reveal Clint Dempsey

Joe Roth couldn’t have found a better Hollywood script than this.

After setting season attendance records in MLS and enjoying prodigious success as an expansion club, Sounders hit a snag on the way to the 2013 playoffs. Owners decide it’s time to break a couple of US Soccer financial records while taking advantage of a rule that everyone had misinterpreted regarding player acquisition.

When Clint Dempsey unveiled his new kit under a gray hoodie it was the culmination of #DempseyWatch, a mania inspired by a British repatration. This is not the colonization of North American Soccer by European powers, this is a homecoming for a big star.

Then the Sounders proceeded to whip Dallas by three goals earning ticket holders free haircuts, and Marcus Hahnemann kept his sheet clean and the fans won free tacos.

This is the life.

Galaxy defeats Juventus at Dodger Stadium

Posted on 04 August 2013 by iyeo

Playing in one of Los Angeles’ most iconic stadiums against one of Eurpoe’s top teams, the Los Angeles Galaxy got big performances from its big time players.

The Galaxy put on quite a show in its first game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. Goals from Center Back Omar Gonzalez, Landon Donovan, fresh off his impressive run of form in the Gold Cup and striker Robbie Keane as the two-time MLS Cup Champions defeated two-time Serie A champions in the second round of the Guinness International Championship Cup.

“I think that our team played well,” Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said. “The result isn’t going to change anything in this world. It’s an exhibition, but I thought our team had a good attitude about the game tonight. They played well against a very good team tonight. We understand though that we’re playing in an exhibition, I don’t want to play them (Juventus) when it really counts.”

The Galaxy surged ahead in the 36th minute due to some crisp passing and awareness. Omar Gonzalez played a ball to midfielder Michael Stephens, who then touched it back to midfielder Juninho. Gonzalez meanwhile made an overlapping run into the Juventus penalty area, Juninho sent a perfectly timed through ball to the sprinting Gonzalez and he chipped keeper Gianuigi Buffon, beating him far post to put LA ahead. The lead though lasted only three minutes, as Juventus got the equalizer when Paolo De Cegile crossed a ball into the penalty area to Fabio Quagliarella, the striker fought off Gonzalez in the six-yard box, then fired a shot that was initially parried away by Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe, but Alessandro Matri got the ball and buried in the rebound chance to level the match.

LA though wasn’t fazed, and went back ahead in the 60th minute thanks to some Juventus misfortune. Galaxy Midfielder Marcelo Sarvas dispossessed Arturo Vidal Pardo deep inside Juventus’ side of the field and striker Robbie Keane chased down the loose ball into the Juventus penalty area. Juventus’ backup keeper Maro Storari, who had replaced Buffon at the start of the second half, looked to cover Keane’s run, but the striker alertly played a ball to a streaking Donovan, who then fired a shot past the scrambling Storari into the back net to give LA the lead again. The Galaxy sealed the win in the 89th minute due another Juventus turnover, and it came from an unlikely source, as Andrea Pirlo played a ball back towards his backline, but didn’t notice Keane was back there as well. Keane again ran down the ball into the penalty area, stuttered, then chipped a ball past Storari into the back net.

“Robbie played well,” Arend said. “He’s been out three weeks and our plan all along was to give him some minutes, most likely on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, and we thought about giving him 30 minutes tonight, but gave him the start in the second half. If he had to come out then we would have taken him out. I was pleased that he was able to get 45 minutes.”

The tournament moves to Miami for matches at Sun Life Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Galaxy will play for Wednesday. LA will play on Wednesday, though its opponent has yet to be determined.
