Danleigh does it again as Red Bulls salvage point versus KC

Van den Bergh, Osorio ejected; will miss next game against Chicago.

An 81st minute goal by rookie midfielder Danleigh Borman, his second in as many games, tied a spirited encounter at Giants Stadium on Saturday night. The Red Bulls, short handed as a result of a questionable red card to Dave van den Bergh minutes earlier, had laid siege to Kevin Hartman’s goal throughout the second half. Jimmy Conrad put Kansas City up on 20 minutes.

Van den Bergh’s red card came in the 77th minute after he appeared to throw an elbow at Davy Arnaud. Not so, said the Dutchman. “My intention was never to hit him. I don’t think I did hit him,” van den Bergh said after the game. “I think he had a good dive, like he was in a friggin’ swimming pool.”

Van den Bergh had barely left the pitch when Juan Carlos Osorio was ejected from the game as well. Osorio declined to discuss the incident, saying he was “very disappointed with the decision. I thought it was unfair.” Both Osorio and van den Bergh will miss the Red Bulls’ next game, this Saturday against the Chicago Fire.

Osorio was pleased with the team’s play in the second half. “I thought it was a great response,” he said. “Credit to the boys. They responded really well in the second half.” Borman, a second half substitution, put in a particularly strong game. “Personally I am very pleased with Danleigh,” said the coach. “He’s developing very well at the moment and contributing to our recent results.”

Borman celebrated his goal the same way he did last week’s at Los Angeles; with a quasi backflip into backwards somersault. This time, a pair of–obviously inebriated–Red Bulls fans, one holding a beer, ran onto the field in an attempt to celebrate with Borman. Stadium security put a quick end to that.

Wizards head coach Curt Onalfo said he had “a bitter taste in my mouth from the way our guys managed that last portion of the match.” When van den Bergh received the red card, “I thought we were walking out of here with three points,” Onalfo said.
