Seeking: A nickname for Red Bull Arena

Posted on 16 April 2010 by Nathaniel E. Baker

What shall we call it? ©ASN

This question was posed in the most recent episode of the Seeing Red! podcast: What to call the New York Red Bulls’ soccer-specific stadium in Harrison, N.J.? Sure, the ground has an official name, Red Bull Arena. But what about an informal name, by which fans can refer to the place? Nothing against Red Bull AG (hey, they did build the place with their own money) but something less corporate is needed.

On the show I introduced several ideas, most of them laughable. I’ve narrowed that list down a bit here but would like to invite readers to submit their own. Simply do so via comment and if we like it I’ll add it to the poll. Simple!

It's the Cathedral of Football IMO. 😉

Saucer is OK of those you mentioned. How about something with Riverbend?

  2. Wes C. Says:

Yes, it's not in Newark, but why not “The Ironbound”.

  3. ASN Editorial Says:

Oh I like that! Because it kind of looks like it's iron bound too! Will add

  4. vk Says:

    I like “The Arena”

  5. ASN Editorial Says:

I forgot about that. Will add as well.

    Sea of Red
    Casa De Los Toros
    Silver Bullet
    UFO
    12th Man
    Harrison's House
    Metro Dome

  7. ASN Editorial Says:

UFO could work. Maybe Harrison's House? The others, not so much. But maybe somebody else thinks differently.

The chute (Chute (in North America), a cattle crush, a cage for restraining a farm animal)

  9. TF Says:

    R.B.A. is perfect.

  10. Lenny Says:

Like TF above, I prefer RBA. No need for anything gimicky. It's simple, elegant, and to the point.

I can't wait to walk into RBA tomorrow night. RBNY 2-FCD 1.

I quite like “The Ironbound” – it's definitely specific to this stadium (i.e., “The Disc”, “The Arena”, etc. really could refer to anything, anywhere), plus I've always felt the name just had a certain poetry to it in image and sound.

  12. ASN Editorial Says:

OK I'll add it to the list. You can vote again tomorrow if you've already cast your vote today

  13. Cameron B Says:

To be honest, I kinda like The Bull Ring. Very nice haha.

RBA or The arena are the only ones I can see. NY has not been an area for contrived names. Time will decide.

    How about the Bullpen?

  16. ASN Editorial Says:

Just a hunch but I don't think baseball references will work with this crowd.

Its The Cathedral. Forget anyone who may have tried to refer to any other place by that name in the past. We are the only stadium worthy of the title. Ribbah is gay and sounds like some washed up country music singer.
