Stammler strike sinks Chivas 1-0 as MLS heads to break

Posted on 05 June 2010 by ASN Staff

A superb 27th minute strike from Seth Stammler was all the New York Red Bulls needed to book three points in their final Major League Soccer match before the World Cup break. Stammler’s highlight goal was the only score in an otherwise lethargic 1-0 victory over Chivas USA at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night. Listen to what Hans Backe had to say here.

With the victory, the Red Bulls enter the two-week break on a winning streak of two games–after a four game losing streak saw the team’s record fall to the .500 mark for the first time this season. With the Columbus Crew losing to the Colorado Rapids, it puts New York level on points with the two-time defending Supporters Shield champions atop the Eastern Conference. The Crew have a game in hand though.

Much more on this later, though there is a suspicion the game itself might be overshadowed by the team’s acknowledgment it had signed a second designated player to join after the World Cup.
