MLS union says it will strike by March 24 unless…

Posted on 11 March 2010 by ASN Staff

Yesterday’s announcement that Major League Soccer and the MLS players union are continuing talks apparently masked a larger, more disconcerting development in the ongoing impasse between the two sides. According to comments by union representative Nick Garcia, and reiterated by ASN sources, the players will announce a strike by midnight, March 25 unless a new collective bargaining agreement is in place by then. March 24 of course being the eve of the regular season opener in Seattle.

The union released a statement from executive director Bob Foose. It reads:

“Recent comments from players simply reflect the fact that the players are unified and, per the results of our strike vote, will not begin the new season if a new agreement with the league is not reached. This is not a change in position by the Union and should not be read to reflect in any way upon what has, or has not, occurred this week in the meetings with the mediator and the league.”

This is one guy of course and there’s still some time but with March 25th looming large, it would be a sad day for Union fans to wait 3 years just to have their inaugural season pushed back. Looking at things – and maybe it’s hard for me to have a definitive view of things enough to take sides – the greater good has to prevail (what’s right for the fans) and so far, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
