Commerce City, CO August 26, 2007 — (ASN) After the Los Angeles Galaxy declared that David Beckham would not travel to Commerce City, the Rapids chance of victory greatly improved. The Galaxy aided the Rapids playoff chase by resting the majority of their regular starters. The result was a dominant 3-0 victory by Colorado.

The Rapids [7-9-6; 27 points] scored three goals for the second straight match and all but eliminated the Galaxy [3-10-5; 14 points] from the MLS playoffs. The Rapids are now tied with the Columbus Crew for the final playoff qualification position. What a coincidence it is that the Rapids travel to Columbus this Sunday to break the tie.

In tonight’s match, the Rapids dominated from start to finish. Colorado pressured Los Angeles whenever they touched the ball. This pressure paid off in the 26th minute as Rapids striker Conor Casey opened his scoring account for the 2007 MLS season. Casey received a pass from Jovan Kirovski and then moved around the Galaxy keeper Joe Cannon. As Cannon stretched out on the turf, Casey maintained his balance and his shot easily met the net.

Casey described the goal, “I had a bad angle, but was able to cut back and Cannon was on the ground. I just slotted it in to an empty net.”

It was just 8 minutes later when Rapids midfielder Colin Clark also opened his scoring account. No Rapids player was more deserving of a goal than Clark. He literally ran his way onto the starting squad with his gritty performances in the previous three matches.

In this instance, Conor Casey dribbled into the Galaxy area and then fed the ball to Terry Cooke. Cooke sent a low cross into the box where a wide-open Clark chipped the ball over the head of Galaxy keeper Joe Cannon.

“We could make a bunch of excuses and say it was travel, or look at the guys who weren’t here, or the games we’ve played lately but we are always disappointed when we lose. There were a lot of guys who showed some character and determination when we were down at half 3-0…”

LA midfielder Kyle Martino

The Rapids closed the scoring with a lucky bounce. Rapids defense man Mike Petke entered the Galaxy penalty area as Terry Cooke delivered a corner kick. Unlucky Joe Cannon tipped the ball directly to unmarked Mike Petke who left-footed the ball into the net.

The Galaxy’s only serious scoring chance game in the 77th minute when striker Alan Gordon broke away from the Rapids defense. He had a 2 on 1 advantage but choose to shoot at the onrushing Rapids keeper Bouna Coundoul. Coundoul stuffed the shot and was on his way to perserve his eighth clean sheet of the season. It is the second time this season that the Rapids have shut-out the Galaxy.

In his post-match comments, Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo was “pleased” with his team. He said, “Right now we are going through an exciting time when we are putting the ball in the back of the net. We are not allowing many chances and we are playing good soccer.”

The Rapids travel to Columbus on September 2 for a 1 PM MT kick-off against the Crew. Casey described the game as “another one we have to win.”

Jovan Kirovski echoed Casey’s sentiments when he said, “[The game against Columbus] is huge. Every game right now is huge. It’s very important that we win [next week]. We’re catching not only Columbus but we’re close to a few teams right now.”
