Sacha Kljestan

Sacha Kljestan missed an injury time penalty and Chivas USA missed out on three points as they tied 1-1 against the New York Red Bulls, Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

In the 64th minute Kljestan put the Red and Whites in the lead with a shot from the edge of the box that appeared to take a deflection on the way to beating Red Bull goalkeeper Bounda Coundoul.

With Juan Pablo Angel up front the New York team was always going to be dangerous, and it was Angel who would prove to be the spoiler for the Red Bulls. He scored a typical Angel goal, with a powerful header in the 84th minute to draw the New Yorkers level.
Although Chivas came close several times, in fact outshooting their opponents 18 to 4 , they could not get that all important second goal.

In the 92nd minute, after a goalmouth scramble, referee Alex Prus pointed to the spot indicating there was a hand ball, giving the Red and Whites a chance at all three points.
Kljestan stepped up to the spot but drove his shot past the left post with keeper Coundoul moving to the right.

Chivas head coach Preki was bitterly disappointed at the end of the game. “It’s really hard to comment on a game like this because I thought that we were the better team the whole 90 minutes. It was tough for us to find a breakthrough and once we did we failed to score a second. We had so many opportunities and that’s what in the end cost us the game.”

The tie keeps Chivas in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference. The Red and Whites travel to Washington D.C. to play DC United next Saturday before returning home October, 10 to match up with the Kansas City Wizards at 7:30 p.m. at the Home Depot Center.
