Ian Joy impresses in Ingolstadt debut

Joy in a match last season for RSL

Former Real Salt Lake defender Ian Joy impressed his new coach in his first competitive match for FC Ingolstadt, according to a local (German language) report. The game, some sort of regional cup tie against Jahn Forchheim, was won by Ingolstadt 4-2.

Despite the result, Ingolstadt head coach Horst Koeppel said he was “not satisfied” with the team’s performance, though he did praise Joy. “He set up two goals and showed he can help us, though maybe not right away because his shot is not strong enough,” Koeppel said of the 28-year old.

Joy signed with the third division side earlier this month after two season with RSL. He previously spent three seasons at St. Pauli and was briefly believed to be returning to the Hamburg club. He also received an offer from Fortuna Duesseldorf that he repeatedly turned down to rejoin RSL in the preseason. Joy was born in San Diego but also has British citizenship from his Scottish mother.

Ian Joy trains with Fortuna Dusseldorf

Ian Joy's days in an RSL jersey appear to be numbered

Journeyman defender Ian Joy, who played last season with Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, is currently training at German third division club Fortuna Dusseldorf, the club announced on its Web site.

The 27-year old defender arrived in the area last night and today had his first practice session with the team. He appears to be a replacement for injured defender Fabian Hergesell but a German press report notes that Joy’s contract status with the German club is unclear. Joy apparently decided to return to Germany (he played at St. Pauli from 2005-2007) for unspecified personal reasons.

Jan. 18 Update:
Joy tells soccer365.com he has turned down Dusseldorf’s offer and will return to the U.S. to prepare for preseason training with Real Salt Lake.

Joy was born in San Diego and played for the U.S. Under-20 national team but grew up in Scotland and has a British passport, which eases (at least bureaucratically) any transition to a German employer.

Ian Joy back to St. Pauli?

Posted on 09 December 2008 by ASN Staff

Chad Marshall may not be the only Yank to join a 2. Bundesliga side this week. Real Salt Lake’s Ian Joy is in Hamburg this week and reportedly looking to sit down with St. Pauli manager Helmut Schulte, according to a German-language report in a Hamburg newspaper. The report does not say where it got its information but says it would be a longshot for Joy to rejoin his old club, as there was little contact between the player and St. Pauli brass this summer.

ASN’s take: Don’t put your money on this happening.
