Union close preseason friendlies with emphatic 5-0 win

Posted on 02 March 2011 by Breton Bonnette

The Union will train for another week or so in Greece (ending their stay on March 10th) but played their last announced friendly earlier today and after a scoreless but dominant first half, the youngsters took charge and the put the game away in the second. Jack McInerney and newly signed attacker Chris Agorsor led the way with two goals a piece against Hersonissos FC, a third division Greek squad, and with time winding down, Danny Mwanga added the fifth. Roger Torres and Kyle Nakazawa helped the process of opening the floodgates as the Union ended their last scheduled game of the preseason with a bang.

The Union finish their preseason friendly schedule 3-1-2 as they prepare to head to Houston in only two and a half weeks. Sebastien Le Toux dominated last year’s preseason scoring but in 2011, the workload was certainly evenly distributed. Le Toux (despite not taking part in the Greek friendlies) had company in the scoring department this preseason scoring two goals along with youngsters Jack McInerney, Chris Agorsor, and Danny Mwanga. There’s a lot of hope with the maturity of the younger attackers and the addition of a poacher like Carlos Ruiz that the Union’s offense will not stop with just Le Toux and Mwanga this season.

Scoring Summary:

PHI – Chris Agorsor 1 (Jack McInerney) 48′
PHI – Jack McInerney 1 (Roger Torres) 55’
PHI – Jack McInerney 2 (Roger Torres) 75’
PHI – Chris Agorsor 2 (unassisted) 82’
PHI – Danny Mwanga 2 (Kyle Nakazawa) 84’

Preseason Rundown:
February 6th – vs. USMNT U-17s (1-1 draw, Le Toux)
February 10th – vs. South Florida (2-0 win, Le Toux, Mwanga)
February 13th – vs. Central Florida (1-0 win, Pfeffer)
February 19th – vs. Orlando City SC (1-0 loss)
February 28th – vs. Ergotelis FC (1-1 tie, C. Ruiz)
March 2nd – vs. Hersonissos FC (5-0 win, McInerney 2, Agorsor 2, Mwanga)

Union to face Ergotelis FC during second preseason leg in Greece

Posted on 16 February 2011 by Breton Bonnette

As announced a while back, the Union will head to Greece for the second leg of the 2011 preseason (February 23-March 10). They will train at Pancretan Stadium in Heraklion (capital of Crete), home of Ergotelis FC which also happens to be the former home – for a brief while – of Clint Mathis. They will play two matches (see below), one against Ergotelis – their hosts – and another against a third division side located in the area.

The Union are 2-0-1 this offseason with one match left to go in Orlando this Saturday and a lot of work still ahead of them. A warmer climate and a gorgeous setting (take a look at the pictures below) should help the Union prepare for a season opener in Houston less than a week and half after they return.

Philadelphia Union’s Preseason Game Calendar in Crete:

Date                Opponent                               Venue                                     Time

2/28/11            Hersonisos F.C.                       Pancretan Stadium                  TBD
3/2/11              Ergotelis F.C.                         Pancretan Stadium                  TBD

As seen from this quick post almost seven months ago to Hellenic News of America, the Union, Ergotelis FC, and Nikos Papadopoulos of Colonial Marble & Granite (sponsors of the trip), could host a “return leg” happen in the States sometime this season.

Union tie U-17s, Le Toux scores first of 2011

Posted on 07 February 2011 by Breton Bonnette

The Union tied their first preseason game, a 1-1 draw with the US U-17s in rain-soaked Central Florida yesterday morning. There was very little to draw from it, except the presence of several trialists and the inclusion of new signings Faryd Mondragon, Brian Carroll, and Carlos Valdes.

Courtesy: PhiladelphiaUnion.com

The starting XI for the Union looked like this for the first half in which they controlled and pressured comfortably:

——————-Mondragon————————

Williams—–Califf———-Valdes———Harvey

————–Carroll———Nakazawa————–

Le Toux——————————————-Mapp

—————-Mwanga——-TRIALIST————–

Le Toux scored first in the 9th minute, an easy tap-in produced by the work of Justin Mapp on the wing. Less than 10 minutes later, it was Le Toux that struck again only to have the goal called back on an offsides call. Not that it matters much but Seba’s goal adds to his Union preseason “record” of 5 in 2010. He had one goal in the first preseason match of the 2010 preseason before dropping a hat-trick on Wake Forest.

Most everybody – according to the Union’s post-game quotes – seemed relatively satisfied with the first preseason match. Califf stressed the lack of cohesion, a first touch, but declared a good first game regardless. If they’re happy, then we’re happy.

The Union will next take on the University of South Florida on Thursday, February 10th (the day – supposedly – the MLS schedule will be released.

Remember CBA talks ’10? Union’s 2011 preseason much smoother so far

The Union have announced four preseason games during their first leg of the preseason, a two-week stay in sunny Orlando, Florida.  See below for details or head to PhiladelphiaUnion.com.

Impressively, the Union and Bimbo Bakeries have also announced a discounted rate to the team’s hotel the Westin Lake Mary outside of Orlando. Not too bad for those looking for a decent vacation and a quick fix of Union preseason goodness.

Take a look back, one year ago. The Union were gearing up to head down to North Carolina for the first leg of their preseason with almost everyone – fans, coaches, players, and owners included – worried that a Collective Bargaining Agreement would not get done in time for the season to start. The Union now have a sponsor quite possibly footing the bill for a yearly trip (until 2014) to train in Orlando, a little experience, and no labor talks to fret over.

Any Union fans heading to Orlando to catch a glimpse of Seba, Califf, and company in action? We’d love to hear about it! Your plans, game recaps, pictures, etc.

Philadelphia Union’s Preseason Game Calendar in Orlando:

Opponent                                     Venue                               Date/KO Time

U-17 US Men National Team           Lake Sylvan Park               Feb. 6 / 11:00 a.m.
University of South Florida                Lake Sylvan Park               Feb. 10 / 3:30 p.m.
University of Central Florida              UCF                                 Feb. 13 / 10:00 a.m.
Orlando City S.C.                            Florida Citrus Bowl             Feb. 19 / 7:00 p.m.

Photos from the First Open Training Session of 2011

Posted on 24 January 2011 by tmclaughlin

The temperatures outside might not be getting above the 20 degree mark today, but the Union were certainly heating up the indoor arena at YSC Sports in Wayne, PA.  Today marked the first of the pre-season open training sessions that will run from 11AM – 1PM all week long.  Both the veteran players and the new talent looked really good as they took the indoor pitch.  The players were scrimmaging, passing and tackling like this was a Monday practice in June.  Good news for all you Union Supporters who are craving the start of the 2011 MLS Season, because the players certainly looked like they were ready to get back out on the pitch at PPL Park!

Just in case you haven’t started your countdown yet, there are only 54 days until the Union travel to Houston to take on the Dynamo at Robertson Stadium, and less than 3 months until the first home match of 2011 in Chester!

ASN Philly photographer Terry McLaughlin made the trip out to bring you some photos of the boys.

Union to Train in Orlando

Posted on 21 January 2011 by stoma

The Philadelphia Union announced today that the club would be spending the first leg of their preseason training in Orlando, Florida each year, beginning this year and running through 2014.  The deal marks an early benefit of the Bimbo Bakeries USA sponsorship announced 10 days ago, as the company will be the presenting sponsor of the Orlando camp in each of the four years.

This year, the club will warm up in game conditions by facing off against USL PRO’s newest addition, Orlando City S.C. at the Citrus Bowl at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2011.

In all, the Union will spend a full 3 weeks training in Florida (January 31-February 20) before returning to finalize preparations for the regular season, which kicks off in Houston on March 19.

In the coming week, come see the Union train for yourself, as practices from January 24-28 (11 a.m.-1 p.m. each day) are open to the public at the YSC Sports facility in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
