The New York Red Bulls could build a training facility in Harrison, N.J., ASN has learned. Harrison mayor Raymond McDonough met with the team’s general manager Erik Stover earlier this week where the topic was discussed at some length, according to an individual familiar with the matter. The facility would be built inside Harrison city lines and not necessarily in the immediate vicinity of Red Bull Arena. No further details were available. A call to Stover was not immediately returned Friday.

The team announced plans to build a six-field facility in Hanover, N.J., in August 2007 with “an anticipated completion date of December 2008”. However little has been heard of the facility since the original announcement and Big Apple Soccer reported March 16 that other options, including one adjacent to Red Bull Arena, were being considered.

In the meantime, the team continues to train in Montclair, N.J., an arrangement that has reportedly irked their head coach. Hans Backe last week told the New York Post that a better training ground is vital if the team is to attract additional designated players, which it is now permitted to do under just-announced MLS rule changes.
