We told you to expect this. Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan will train with Scottish champions Celtic Football Club starting Saturday, the Los Angeles-based Major League Soccer club announced Thursday.

Kljestan departed the U.S. Men’s National Team’s camp last night to join Celtic at its Lennoxtown training center near Glasgow. After training with Gordon Strachan’s squad for a week, Kljestan is scheduled to return to Southern California on Jan. 22, ahead of the United States’ Jan. 24 international friendly versus Sweden at The Home Depot Center.

Update, Jan. 25: Kljestan is waiting to see if $2.9 million offer from Celtic is accepted by MLS, according to the New York Times. Celtic, for its part says it will have a decision shortly, according to the Evening Times.

Reports of a Kljestan move to Europe began to surface last summer, with Strachan’s team only one of a series of clubs said to be lining up bids for the 23-year old.

ASN’s take: Kljestan is one of the most talented midfield players the U.S. has ever produced. We expect Strachan to like what he sees. Figure Kljestan to have an offer (if not a contract) in hand when he returns to L.A. for the USMNT friendly.

Kljestan to Holland? Or Monaco? Or…

Posted on 10 December 2008 by ASN Staff

Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan is wanted by Dutch Eredivisie clubs FC Twente and SC Heerenveen, according to reports in the Dutch press.

Update: Reports in the French press state that Ligue Un club Monaco, which already has Freddy Adu on its roster, could make a move for Kljestan. This follows other reports that Kljestan could be signed by any of the following (in no particular order): Olympiakos, Zenit St. Petersburg, Celtic or Bayer Leverkusen.

The Dec. 14 Sunday Times says Celtic “are keen to land the highly-rated attacking midfielder.”

Reports of a move to Twente have been in the works for some time. The club is coached by former England head coach Steve McClaren, who this summer was said to be considering a $3 million to $4 million offer for the 23-year old Kljestan.

Heerenveen of course are the former club of fellow U.S. national team midfielder Michael Bradley. Bradley moved to Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach in the offseason.

ASN’s take: It may not be Twente. It may not be Heerenveen. It may not even be to Holland. But Kljestan is gone this winter. Sorry, Chivas fans.
