Revs go deep on defense

Posted on 16 February 2011 by Hank Alexandre

The New England Revolution have signed 22 year old Argentine defender Franco Coria, according to The Boston Globe.

Coria, a center back who joins the Revs on a loan deal from Chacarita Juniors of the Primera B Nacional league, Argentina’s second division, will add much needed depth to a depleted back line that surrendered a league high 50 goals last season.

With the additions of Coria, MLS veteran Ryan Cochrane, and rookie A.J. Soares, central defense appears to have been the position that Steve Nicol has primarily focused on strengthening this off-season; a position that due to successive injuries over the 2010 campaign, Nicol was forced into starting various midfielders at center back.

While Coria will more than likely see most of his playing time in a central position, he could also provide cover for Kevin Alston at right back. The Revolution have also secured French international Didier Domi and re-signed 2nd year Revs man Seth Sinovic to shore up the left side of defense.

Dabo Done Deal

Posted on 11 February 2011 by Hank Alexandre

The New England Revolution have revealed the identity of one of their three international signings as French International central midfielder Ousmane Dabo.

Rumors that Dabo was coming to New England have been circulating for more than a week as the team had to wait for MLS approval before making the announcement.

Dabo, now 34 years old, spent most of his early career playing in Italy for a number of Serie A teams, as well as some short stints in France. In 2003, it appeared that he had settled into the first team at Italian club Lazio, where he went on to make 79 appearances over two seasons. In 2006, Dabo transferred to Manchester City, where he made headlines both on and off the pitch, having suffered a detached retina at the hands of his then teammate, Joey Barton. Dabo eventually returned to Lazio where he scored the game winning penalty kick in the 2009 Coppa Italia. Since the end of the 2010 season, Dabo has been without a club; that is until New England expressed interest.

Dabo will occupy one of the Revs’ eight international roster spots, and will join the team once his visa is finalized. The Revolution will be heading to Orlando, Florida for an extended training session beginning on Monday, February 14th.

Revs re-sign Phelan; Roster comes into focus

Posted on 08 February 2011 by Hank Alexandre

The New England Revolution announced yesterday that they have signed  3 year veteran Pat Phelan to a new contract.

Phelan, who joined the team in 2008 through a trade with Toronto FC, led the team in on field appearances with 34 overall (28 in the regular season, and 25 as a starter) despite picking up a substantial head injury.  Phelan played most of the season wearing protective head gear.

Phelan served as the backup central midfielder for his first two seasons with the club, but became the Revs preferred midfield partner for Shalrie Joseph following the departure of Jeff Larentowicz.  Phelan started coming into his own last season,  scoring two goals and an assist, his first official points in MLS.

While it may not be the news that fans were looking for, it does bring the roster a bit into focus.  The Revolution recently released central midfielder Jason Griffiths, reportedly to free up an international spot on the roster.  With news on the horizon of an international Central Midfielder joining the club, Phelan will more than likely be returning to the role of back-up, joining rookie Stephen McCarthy on the bench.

The Revolution are reportedly waiting for paperwork to clear MLS before announcing three additional international signings; a central midfielder, a central defender, and a third player rumored to be an attacking wide player.
